SUMMER IN A JAR: CREATING POTPOURRI

Capture the fragrance of the natural world. Bring the wonderful scents of garden, field and forest into your home. Learn how to dry herbs and flowers and then combine them with other botanicals to make bowls of lovely, fragrant potpourri.
Discover how to blend grown and gathered botanicals with fixatives and fragrant oils to create a variety of unique recipes. Then, design a potpourri of your own to take home.

Bring an apron, sharp scissors and a large glass or food grade plastic jar with a screw top lid to class. A $22.00 materials fee collected in class covers all supplies, handouts and fixative jar. 2 hrs.

FLOWERS FOR AUTUMN

Capture the beauty and abundance of Autumn in a colorful arrangement of fresh flowers, fruits, berries and preserved leaves for your home. We will combine wild flowers, roses, jewel colored chrysanthemums, and other fall flowers with fragrant herbs, glycerined leaves, and sprays of berries and greens to create a long-lasting , classic mass arrangement. Students will choose a container from a selection of baskets and pots provided by the instructor.

All plant material , mechanics and containers are supplied by the instructor.

GLORIOUS AUTUMN POT!

Plant a pot that captures the glory of autumn in New England. Summer may be over but there are at least two, sometimes three, months of growing season left. Fill a 14” pot with a selection of brilliant mums, richly colored kales, miniature evergreens, English ivy and other hardy plant material. With proper care your pot will brighten your doorway or patio until Thanksgiving.

A $40.00 materials fee covers all plants, pot and soil. Be sure to bring an apron and floral or garden scissors to class. 2 hrs.

TWIG WALL BASKET WITH DRIED FLOWERS

What could be lovelier for fall then a handsome twig wall basket filled with colorful dried flowers?
Combine hydrangea, statice, yarrows and other dried flowers with greens and preserved leaves to create an arrangement that can customize any decor. Finished with ribbon or raffia, the basket can be used indoors or on a sheltered door or porch.

A $ 42.00 materials fee covers all plant material, basket, mechanics and ribbons. Please bring flower or garden scissors to class.

HERBS FOR THE KITCHEN: PRESERVING SUMMER’S HERBS FOR WINTER USE

Now, while gardens and farm stands are brimming with fresh herbs, is the time to prepare for winter cooking and holiday gift giving.
Imagine lining your cupboard shelves with jewel toned bottles of herb vinegars, golden brown herb mustards and sparkling jars of herbed jellies. Picture containers of herbed butters, bags of rosemary walnuts and jars of herb pestos filling a corner of your freezer. Not enough time? To much work? Not true!! These delicious enhancements to daily meals are quickly and easily made.
Learn how to dry or freeze herbs and how to make mustards, butters, vinegars, jellies, flavored nuts and pestos with fresh herbs. Students will sample each recipe demonstrated and then make an herb vinegar, herb mustard and herb butter to take home.

A $35.00 materials fee includes the cost of food, all supplies and a copy of Betsy’s book, Mrs. Thrift’s Cupboard, a collection herbal recipes for the time-challenged cook.

AUTUMN DRIED FLOWER BASKET

Fill a basket with dried flowers in Autumns’ fabulous colors: golds, burgundies, reds, greens, purples, lavenders, pinks, rusts and creams. Learn the art of arranging dried flowers and preserved leaves to create a full, lovely display.

Choose a basket suited to your home from the selection of 9” baskets provided by the instructor then fill it with dried roses, yarrows, carnations, statices, pods, berries and glycerined leaves. With proper care, your finished arrangement will give you several years of enjoyment.

DRIED FLOWER TABLE GARLAND

Decorate your table with beautiful, long lasting dried flowers. Create a 24” garland centerpiece with green lemon leaves, ferns, roses, statice, preserved leaves, grasses and other dried flowers. Chicken wire and moss make the base. Don’t have room on your table? Hang your garland on a wall or over a doorway for a decorative accent. Beautiful, fun and long lasting!

FALL TWIG DOOR WREATH

Celebrate the richness of autumn with a 15” twiggy wreath decorated with golden yarrow and other colorful dried flowers, preserved copper beech leaves, green lemon leaves, pods and berries. Finish the wreath with ribbons or raffia to coordinate with your home. Hang the wreath outdoors in a sheltered area or indoors to add a seasonal touch to your home.

A PUMPKIN FULL OF FLOWERS

DSCF0013.jpgPeter, Peter Pumpkin Eater may have kept his wife in a pumpkin shell but you can fill your’s with beautiful fall flowers as a grand welcome to America’s favorite scary holiday--Halloween. After we have hollowed out a pumpkin, we’ll fill it with colorful mums, grains, preserved leaves , herbal greens and fresh berries.

A $32.00 fee collected in class covers all materials. Please bring floral scissors and an apron to class. Pumpkin cleaning can be messy! 2hrs

HEIRLOOM PUMPKIN HARVEST CENTERPIECE


Make an autumn centerpiece that can be used for both Halloween and Thanksgiving.
Hard skinned heirloom pumpkins are flatter then orange Halloween pumpkins and come in shades of green, cream, purple and peach.
An uncut, long-lasting heirloom pumpkin makes an elegant base for a striking harvest arrangement of dried flowers, herbs, grains, pods, peppers, mosses, berries and preserved leaves.

Be sure to bring a pair of floral scissors and apron with you.
A materials fee of $39.00 is payable to the instructor in class. 2 1/2 hrs.
